Janie Barnett is a native Virginian, where she grew up on folk, blues, jazz and bluegrass concerts. Her early singing and songwriting was influenced by many underage concert experiences at Washington D.C.'s infamous Cellar Door, where she saw early performances of Emmylou Harris, James and Livingston Taylor, Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon, and Jackson Browne.

Janie began performing in the D.C. area at an early age, then made her way to Cambridge, Massachusetts for schooling and bar-band gigs. Her years in New England prepared her for freelance life in New York City, where she has been an active session singer, guitarist, producer and songwriter working in films, television, jingles, and on pop records. She has worked alongside artists as varied as Bonnie Raitt, Rickie Lee Jones, Celine Dion, Marc Cohn, Carly Simon, Patti Austin, Jessica Simpson, Chris Botti, and Kevin Bacon to name but a few.

Her concerts are intimate and energizing, and she has been known to spin a tale or two over a night's performance.

Janie has released three solo recordings. Her 1990 release "Shake The Ladder" rose to heavy rotation on college radio and her songs have been included in several indie anthologies. Of her most recent release, 2001's "belong," New York City's Music Paper wrote: "She will put you in a trance...her voice is unforgettable...the lyrics are brilliant (and) the songs drift like jewels across a shimmering sea of musical anticipation."

Her songwriting has been called cinematic and evocative, although resolutely accessible, full of rich texture both harmonically and lyrically. A painter of life mosaics and urban landscapes, Janie draws from influences in alternative pop, blues, folk, and aesthetic philosophy. Brian Addonisio of Good Times magazine wrote: "Reminiscent of Kate Bush and Rickie Lee Jones...textured harmonies and acoustic guitars almost put you in a trance."

An artist with a strong personal vision of the world, Janie writes passionately of autonomy, community, romantic love, and the journeys we make through the modern maze of life.

Janie occasionally joins forces with her two friends and colleagues, Margaret Dorn and Terre Roche, to perform as the Cronetones. The three troubadours mix and match their songs and stories to offer an evening of passionate songs and a bit o' vaudeville on the side. So far NYC's illustrious Living Room has played host to this indulgence.
